Originally a normal playing card deck began to be used for divination. This began in Italy more then 500 year ago and became an occult practice quite by accident.
Divination was considered a form of witchcraft as the Catholic Church gained dictactorship and many were killed or jailed for using the tarot. It therefore became an underground movement or mostly dissapeared or became something weird in the mainstream psyche.
As metaphysics and new age philosphy gains momentum we are seeing an increase in acceptance of the use of tarot again. This is becoming particularly apparent on the interwebs. Divination and tarot software is becoming increasingly popular.
Free tarot card reading software is a fun and easy way to get answers. I would not recommend these tools as a serious divination option. However, I do feel if they are well used as entertainment and fun, they can be rewarding and give a basic initiation and understanding of tarot and the tarot card meanings.
